John gave this drawing to saxophonist and professor, Yusef Lateef, Coltrane's colleague and tutor. The outer circle is the whole tone scale starting in C as all the numbers indicate, the inner circle is also a whole tone scale but it starts in B. Hence together, all 12 notes are on the circle.
